“Ready, Set, Move to the Music!”, a fun-filled participatory program for young children and accompanying adults, is offered for the 2016 Summer Reading Program theme, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read”.

Everyone forms a circle and warms up with yoga poses that mimic various animals, after which they move to and sing along with a variety of popular music and movement songs. Children are then invited to act out the motions of people or animals (having spontaneously envisioned these movements while listening to my flute, clarinet, and saxophone improvisations with their eyes closed) and lead participants in rhythmic reenactments of these movements to the accompaniment of my drumming. They also experience the joy of dancing while waving colorful ribbons in time to the music, and pretend to be clowns and mimes by enacting gestures of athletes, gardeners, homemakers, and other movements of adults and children performed in their daily lives.

Handouts including both lyrics and motions of a number of movement and music songs as well as websites with creative movement games for children are offered to participants at the conclusion of the program.

Program duration: one hour.

John has offered successful programs for children and families for a number of Summer Reading Program themes in the past decade, including “Feeling the Beat, Feeling the Spirit” featuring homemade musical instruments. He is a father, grandfather, and experienced daycare provider as Owner and Operator of “Our House Daycare” featuring creative play and nature exploration for preschool-aged children.
